I regret the years I spent duped believing that the US was ‘all that’ and that I was obligated to live here only. It’s only been a few years ago, even after I travelled to ‘the continent’ that I started considering Afrika as a place that I could live. This is a ‘miracle’ given the fact that when I was a child I was heavily indoctrinated like most black folk in the West that Afrika was not ever an option to travel let alone live. When I first went to Afrika(Tanzania 2012)first off, I was hated on by some family, but I went anyway and I told them what I thought of their afrophobia. I even made it a point to go again revealing my plans at ‘holiday’ gatherings. Secondly, when I went I figured I wouldn’t see wazungu on the plane going to Tanzania or Kenya or on the ground when I landed. But in true crakkka hypocritical fashion I saw more non black people than I expected to see. Imagine. The same people who had painted Afrika as the most horrible, deplorable place are in Afrika having a blast and sadly being treated like royalty by unaware continental Afrikans. Now years later, it’s refreshing to see the ‘ Back to Afrika’ movement happening. Black folk, even the ones who may choose not to go are seeing that Afrika is more than those early a.m. infomercials painting Afrika as a place full of starving children. Although there are probably situations where that could be the case, there’s so much more and I saw it with my own eyes. I also learned that any negativity going on on the continent there is one public enemy number one behind the scenes stirring the pot of meddling, causing conflict and confusion. They are the cause for the problems black people encounter on the continent and in the diaspora. But in spite of that, it’s time to make that move and get off the United Snakkkes plantation. Just my thoughts today.
