I work in a very small black owned take out only coffee shop; there is only one person per shift. It works perfectly for me and currently, I have worked here longer than any of my previous jobs. I play reggae music EVERY single shift. It’s healing for me and nostalgic. However, a majority of our customer base is wazungu. So often times, they tell me that the music makes them “want to go on vacation to a warm place” or they “love the vibes”. To me, this is an insult as the lyrics to these songs are militant, uplifting, empowering, healing, and a form of medicine and here they are reducing it to “good vibes” as if they know what vibes even mean!! What are your thoughts??

Where you work sounds cool. I work at freaking wal-mart so I am jealous of your job. I would over look those white folks’ comments tbh they probably do not know what they are listening to anyway if it is millitant; they don’t get it. Do they matter other than to buy coffee from you. Just look at them simply as consumers the way non black people look at us when they come in to our space to sell crap to us. lmao.
-
Walmart!! If I worked in that job, the amount of incense sticks I would burn and chants I would sing to the ancestors BEFORE and AFTER every shift!! I’ll never complain about my job again.. I commend you for working in that mega plantation.

I don’t want to do it but I am like everyone else just trying to get a check. This job is not going to give me no anxiety and stress. just do the little job and go home. It pretty simple stocking. I’m just so glad I am not a cashier because I couldn’t deal with people in my face all day. Especially with covid or flu or whatever germ these folks got out here. And I am not a small talk type of person either. So yeah just glad for that.
-
I’m glad that stocking is your job; very simple and to the point. Being a cashier is very hard and I’m not a small talker either.. straight to the point. Entitled white people in my job try to make small talk but I curve them because at the end of the day, I’m only interested in goods and services.. referencing to what you said earlier about viewing them as consumers.

You are right; they do see us as just customers so I should rightfully do the same to them. Our black customer base is slowly growing, so hopefully this becomes less of a thing for me.

They probably dont ‘get’ the true meaning behind the songs especially if they are not obviously saying, “kill de white ppl” @Makiya. Thank you for your support to my group. I know it’s a bit ‘corny’ and that no one can relate to it. *side eye* #sarcasm

Karibu sis!! And actually there are a couple reggae songs I play that explicitly talks about the black struggle. One time this wazungu girl came in and I was playing “coming harder” by Everton Blender. So while I’m making her drink he sings “they took us away from Afrika with an intention to kill our culture, but through d power of the most high, our mental capacity get wider”. I know she felt awkward hearing that. Another time, two “Hispanic” people walked in and they heard the beginning of “African Pride” by Buju Banton playing so they started moving along to the music 🤮🤢. But once they heard him say “Afrikans with Afrikan pride”, I swear to you they stopped dancing 😂😂

The so called rastas of today are the ones that make them feel comfortable around reggae. I’ve seen how they behave around white females and some of them have this sort of brotherhood with white males that smoke weed.
-
🤮🤮 this makes me angry and nauseous.. but I have seen what you are talking about. It’s true. The rastas of nowadays are a fraud. I grew up around REAL Rastafarians back in Trinidad 🇹🇹, and if they saw these fraudsters doing this, they will cuss them out.
-
There’s a ‘rasta’ I know he is from an African nation. He is married to a cavebeast.
-
Again 🤢 what is wrong with these people?! He is definitely compromised. What are your thoughts?
-
He’s a hypocrite who capes for wazungu women. Totally cancelled

Black owned coffee shop? Awesome. When I ‘pull up’ to the BK Imma have to come through. Anyway, why didnt I catch that? I knew it couldnt be Starbucks or Panera Bread if you was playing ‘kill de wypipo’ kind of music. lol
-
🤮🤮 I could never work at those places.. is it safe to say I’m off the plantation? Or almost off? And yes we will love to have you 😊 only thing is my boss is trying to stay “neutral” so he doesn’t post up the black owned sticker.
-
-
Sometimes we have to appear neutral. The spook who sat by the door.
-
I understand why he chooses to do so, but I personally can’t rock with that. This is why I don’t ever plan to open a business in this country. You will know who I am from jump; I don’t believe in neutrality.
