“Thoth is, ‘par excellence, the discoverer of the arts.’ Through him, humanity owes Egypt numbers and computation, geometry, astronomy, the mathematical games of draughts and dice, and writing. Solon states that he himself traveled to Sais, in the Egyptian delta: ‘He was treated with great consideration by the inhabitants of the country. In particular, one day, while he was inquiring about the antiquities from the most learned priests in the subject, he found out that neither he nor any Greek knew anything, so to speak, about such matters.’”
“Plato’s text makes it clear that Solon (c. 640-558 BC), visited Egypt for the purpose of learning under the Egyptian priests about ‘the ancient ages’ of history. Solon asked the priests to give him a detailed, step by step account of everything they knew about the inhabitants of his country in times past.’”
“The reply one Egyptian priest gave Solon was as follows: ‘So I will reveal to you, in summary form, the laws of your fellow citizens who lived nine thousand years ago, along with their exploits, their most splendid accomplishments. Some other time, at our leisure, we shall go through all this step by step, with the appropriated texts in hand.’”
