I’ve heard about post-harvest losses. Villages lack food processing and preserving facilities and redistribution of this surplus locally?
-
Seems like the issues are everything you mentioned, as well as poorly executed transportation between counties and cities.
-
Maybe @dukuzumurenyi is thinking about this already, but if women are the main agriculturalists, they would be best suited for determining their post-harvest production and facility needs and then men could help them make it happen + distribute to markets, schools, etc.
-
@ajayrevels that has worked where its been tried. Since this story is Kenya who are the primary landowners to begin with?
-
@dukuzumurenyi Here is my first pass at answering that question. Still more digging to do but used this claim in the article as a entry point:
“Kenya loses Sh18 billion in tomatoes’ post-harvest loss.”
1. Who owns the land?
Ministry of Lands and National Land Commission (NLC): gov agency
– issues with illegal land selling
Agricultural Development Corporation (ADC) owns land in Kilifi county.2. Who is producing tomatoes?
– small holder farmers: 70% of rural Kenyans work in agriculture
– small holders use sales from agro product to pay for living fees
– 2017 pro-market article on “shortage” of tomatoes
– 2019: male tomato farmers grow 400,000 tonnes/ yr, 7% of total yield
– 2020: urban Kenyans returned to villages to farm = surplus tomatoes3. Where do the tomatoes go post-harvest?
– Value chain (includes small holders) pg 20
– study recommends farmer associations and cooperatives

Here is a simple value chain diagram that illustrates how the current Kenyan agro market system is set up. as @dukuzumurenyi has pointed out, this traps AF ppl in growing crops for financial gain, discourages distribution of surplus throughout communities and discourages saving surplus crops for future needs.
