The main problematic issue of these African language classifications (Niger – Kordorfian, Afro-Asiatic, and Nilo-Saharan etc) from Greenberg is the method in which they were built. All of these language phyla will be REPLACED according to (Fodor 1966). The method was ‘mass comparison’ that established these phyla. Greenberg himself stated that the method of mass – comparison is only a probing tool and is not intended to establish proof of a genetic relationship.

“It is important to bear in mind that the STANDARD classification of African languages, by Greenberg(1963) is BASED, NOT on the comparative method, but rather on MASS COMPARISON.” (Dimmendaal 2011: 306).
