“Jamaica was the single most important location of the transatlantic Igbo diaspora. Nearly a quarter-million slaves from the Bight of Biafra, or one-quarter of the Biafra trade’s total (and fully one-third of those captives shipped from the three main coastal slave-trading entrepots), wound up on the sugar plantations and other farms as well as the towns and villages of Jamaica. But as the British dominated this massive commerce in captive human beings, enslaved Igbo and other Biafran Africans were taken in large numbers throughout the British Americas, most notably Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, and St. Kitts, and even relative backwaters like Virginia and the Carolina Lowcountry in North America.”
