“In the 1700s and 1800s, records provide considerable evidence that Africans used their African language names. The spellings of the names varied. Male personal names were adapted from their Akan language bases. They included: Sunday-Quashee, Quashy, Quash, Quashy, Quashee instead of Kwasi; Monday-Cudjo instead of Kwadwo; Tuesday-Cubbenah instead of Kwabena or in Fanti, Kwamina; Wednesday-Quarcoe, Quaco or Kwaco for Kwaku; Thrusday-Quao for Yaw; Friday-Coffie, Cuffee, Cuffy instead of Kofi; and Saturday-Quame for Kwame (Kwami). Quaw was used frequently as a male personal name and was a version of Kwasi, Kwadwo, Kwabena, Kwaku or Kwame. Female personal day names also appeared with some frequency: Sunday-Quasheba; Monday-Juba; Tuesday-Beneba; Wednesday-Cuba; Thursday-Abba; Frida-Pheba, Phibbi; and Saturday-Mimba.”
