WOOOOOOIIII @bunjigarlin – YUH REALLY TEK ME SPIRIT WID DA ONE YA! THIS DEFINITELY MY ANTHEM FOR 2023… AND PROBABLY DI NEXT DECADE TO RAAHTID!
For those who play mass & Jouvay, you will be familiar with the tradition of dabbing or being immersed in Mud. Well scholars of Carnival have confirmed that this is an honour to Obatala! Obatala is an Orisha (divinity) of the Isese (often called IFA) tradition codified by our Yoruba Ancestors. The Yoruba spiritual system is very heavily preserved and evolved through out the Americas, including Trinidad 🇹🇹.
Obatala is the principle divinity that Olodumare (The Creator) tasked with the responsibility of shaping the form of human beings. Obatala formed humans out of the MUD!
For this and other reasons he is considered the “Father of the Orisha”. He represents Ritual & Ethical Purity & Wisdom. He is the epitome of Iwa Pele (Balance Character) As such, his colour is White.
ÀṢẸẸẸẸẸẸẸẸ ÀṢẸẸẸẸẸẸẸẸẸẸẸẸẸẸẸẸ – The word of power. In Yoruba Cosciousness, Àṣẹ is the primal creative life force. As such it is also an expression of our capacity to bring things on to manifestation. It can betranslated as “Let it be done” – a definitive affirmation of our will.
The LEVELS Inna da tune ya. Giving thanks Bunji Garlin. You made my year!

Oh wow never really hear any Pan-Afrikan Soca chunes
-
Y’mon dem av nof Pan-Afrikan chune
-
-
mi like Soca but bro ShakaRa is a great digger always finding the Pan-Afrikan Soca and Calypso chune…I mostly hear dem sing bout whining lol
-
-
@taharka2018 yes I. Mi know bout Kaiso. The genealogy being Kaiso > Calypso > Soca. Kaiso ah beautiful wood.
@Afron8v yeh most morderm day Soca is very unpolitical. You have some underground vibes. But then theres Rapso, with people like Brother Resistance (RIP) That’s is very political. Old school Calypso is very political however. Decidedly so, very well known for social commentary and ppl that do traditional calypso today often follow that tradition. Chalkdust for example.
-
I should say however, sometimes the politics are in disguise somewhat… Say for example, the Ultimate Rejects Full Extreme. When them seh “The City could bun down, we Jammin still… The economy could crash down we Jammin still ..” there’s an implictly political message in there ….
-
@shakara yea, I notice a lot of metaphoric political commentary as opposed to overt lyrics
