I was happy to listen to tonight’s talk about the Gullah Geechee language by Dr. Jessica Berry. One of the things that Dr. Berry indicated is that, lexical features aside, Gullah is essentially an African language. In this way it mirrors other African Diasporan languages such as Haitian Creole, Jamaican Patois, Papiamentu, Ebonics (yes, also so-called “Black English”), and others.

Of course, many of our common cultural practices derive from our African origins, such as our food traditions, spiritual practices, martial traditions, and so forth.
