We have some very powerful presentations scheduled for this year’s ASCAC Midwest Region conference exploring a range of themes including health and healing, resistance to enslavement, Nile Valley history and historiography, archeology, language, and more.
I’ll be doing a presentation tomorrow entitled “Sankɔfa, Al’adun Jarumi, da Asali: A Thesis on the History and Historiography of 52 Blocks.” While many of you may know that “sankɔfa” represents our efforts to reclaim our past, you not be familar with the other terms. “Jarumi” is Hausa word for “warrior” and “Al’adun Jarumi” can be translated as “warrior culture.” You might be curious as to why I would use Hausa terminology in my presentation’s title. You should attend my presentation to find out. I’ll be addressing historical discourse pertaining to the African American fighting art, 52 Blocks and its connection to other combat traditions from Africa and the African Diaspora.
