Peace, I had the privilege to visit Dakar, Senegal for a CSO conference the past week. I profited from the occasion to attend a film symposium on the great Djibril Diop Mambety,- renown cineaste of said country. It held at Cheikh Anta Diop university with it’s theme being the intransigence and precocity of the late artist’s work. The workshop held over the course of four days, and I had the opportunity to participate in one. The program was host by the cinema club at one of the school’s amphitheaters. The discussions at the session centered around the craft of montage in Mambety’s works, and the force of syntax in conveying his messages. An example is the filmmakers tendency to juxtapose shots of actions taking place simultaneously. A projection of the film ‘Touki Bouki’ took place afterwards.

Thanks Tokunbo, indeed it was. They have an active cinema club in Dakar, and organizers are working to develop them in other districts in Senegal. This is a concept that can be adopted in other countries like Ghana etc.
