Random Jamaican Creole lesson in session.
In Jamaica, the words “pear” and “pure” are homonyms. Neither word, however, is pronounced how one would expect. Both words are pronounced like the words peer/ pier, but we’re never actually talking about your equal(peer), to look keenly/ searchingly(peer), a landing place for ships(pier) or that sweet fruit(pear). Pure is also pronounced like the word “beer” which, in Jamaica, is also a homonym of bear and bare, but we’re not talking about the animal, being uncovered, or the alcoholic stuff you drink.
We’re just saying “avocado”(pear pron. peer) and “nothing but”(pure pron. peer and beer)
And we’re never confused about any of this. 😃
