Tanzania: What is Known About Tanga Port Expansion & Its Economic Impact

Recently, the Tanzanian government announced plans to double the service area of Tanga Port from 450 meters to 900 meters, aiming to boost its cargo-handling efficiency.

The expansion, confirmed on Monday by Treasury Registrar Nehemiah Mchechu during an inspection visit, is part of a broader investment of $171 million aimed at transforming the port into a regional trade hub.

      Current upgrades include:

deepening the port’s service area from 3 meters to 13 meters,
widening the entrance gate to 135 meters,
improving infrastructure to support larger vessels.

The expanded port, combined with the Chongoleni oil terminal and a planned jetty for Ugandan crude oil shipments, represents a “significant investment,” Mchechu noted.

The port is a major contributor to revenue, he said, underscoring the need for continued focus and excellence in operations.

While investors will operate port facilities, all assets will remain publicly owned, ensuring long-term national benefit, Mchechu said.

Improved infrastructure has already reduced ship handling costs and boosted industrial activity in Tanga, Tanzania Ports Authority Director Plasduce Mbossa earlier said.
