Ethiopia Officially Inaugurates the Grand Renaissance Dam

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has officially inaugurated the Grand Renaissance Dam on the Nile River, in a ceremony attended by several African leaders and representatives of international organizations.

On the occasion, Ethiopian President Taye Atske-Selassie shared a message on social media, describing the project as “a reward for the steadfastness of the Ethiopian people.”

“Everything we strive for is achieved through our sweat, blood, tears, and honor. We are grateful for the foresight and courage of our leaders, past and present. This is the first of many great achievements still to come. Let there be eternal light!” his statement read.

Construction of the dam began in 2011, with Ethiopia financing most of the $4.2 billion project independently.

Once fully operational, the dam is expected to generate more than 6,000 megawatts of electricity, making it the largest hydroelectric power plant in Africa.
