Ashenda is a traditional women’s cultural festival celebrated during the summer season in the last week of the month of August in Tigray, northern Ethiopia 🇪🇹

It is a 3-day festival of womanhoơd, sisterhood, and female joy, celebrated every August in Tigray, Ethiopia, where all women show up with their natural hair. It brings together physical adornment, music, and dance to honor the feminine form, where female participants are gifted food, drinks, and money by the rest of the community.

On the occasion of Ashenda also known as Shaday or Ahendiye in Amhara regional state, the young women and girls dress the best traditional dresses called tilfi which is a cotton dress decorated with amazing embroidery from the neck to toe in front of the dress.

It is not only on this event that Ethiopian women show up with natural hair. l have met quite a number of Ethiopian women who truly embrace who they are. No makeup, no wigs, and they are always glowing.
