Mali’s military government have announced a massive financial reward of up to 2 billion CFA Francs ($3.5 million) for information leading to the arrest or neutralisation of the country’s most notorious terrorist leaders. The high-stakes bounty specifically targets the top echelon of both al-Qaeda-linked jihadist networks and northern separatist Tuareg rebel movements accused of orchestrating deadly terrorist attacks against the Malian state.
At the very top of Mali military’s target list is Iyad Ag Ghaly, the elusive leader of the Al-Qaeda linked, Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), alongside Hamadou Kouffa, the commander of JNIM’s brutal central faction, the Katiba Macina, and senior operative Seidane Ag Hitta. Concurrently, the Mali military government has weaponized the bounty system against political separatist leaders from the Front de Libération de l’Azawad (FLA), naming high-profile figures Alghabass Ag Intallah and Bilal Ag Acherif as key targets.
Bilal Ag Cherif was in France last year meeting with French “security officials” and his spokesperson was in France a couple weeks ago doing interviews in the French media, after the April 25th terrorist attacks in Mali.
- The offer follows al Qaeda-linked attacks in the April 25 terrorist attack that killed the defense minister and wounded other officials.
- The government offered 2 billion CFA francs ($3.55 million) for information leading to Iyad Ag Ghaly, the leader of the local al Qaeda affiliate Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimeen
- It offered smaller rewards for several other high level suspects, including Alghabass Ag Intalla, a Tuareg separatist leader.
- The order was signed in Bamako by Major General Daoud Aly Mohammedine, Mali’s minister of security and civil protection.
