Mali sentenced a French intelligence officer — operating under diplomatic cover at the Bamako embassy — to 20 years in prison for undermining state security.
Yann Vézilier who was officially registered as an agent of France’s foreign intelligence service (DGSE) with Malian authorities, was sentence to 20 years in prison, accused of having attempted to orchestrate a ‘destabilization attempt’ against the Malian government, led by President General Assimi Goïta.

• Yann Christian Bernard Vézilier is a French Intelligence Agent and accredited diplomat who was sentenced to 20 years in prison by Mali’s military government for his alleged involvement in a plot to overthrow the Malian government.
• Vézilier, an École militaire de l’air graduate and former lieutenant colonel who spent nearly 30 years in France’s Air Force, was “working” as an employee at the French Embassy in Bamako when he was arrested, in August 2025.
• Malian authorities detained him alongside dozens of Malian military personnel, including two prominent army generals. The ruling military government, led by President General Assimi Goïta, publicly accused Vezilier of being a French intelligence agent.
• The Malian government alleges that Vézilier operated on behalf of France to mobilize civil society leaders, political figures, and military officers in a coordinated conspiracy to overthrow the government and destabilize the country.
Conviction and Sentencing
A Malian court handed down a conviction finding Vezilier guilty of the destabilization plot, sentencing him to a 20-year prison term, which he is expected to serve within Mali.
