      Yes, I was there back in 2001. I actually witnessed a lunar eclipse there. Bandiagara was the clearest I’ve ever seen stars before or since up on the rooftops and I had read Conversations with Ogotemmeli, which is set in Bandiagara and I was like “No wonder they know about stars like this” lol
      Too dangerous for other villages? When I was there, I caught a festival in the more remote villages.

  Ah! My brother! No-go as in the instability around Mopti and Bandiagra. Largely started with the Jihadis in the area but its more complicated now. Infighting between the Dogon and their neighbours whom theyve lived with for centuries. The so-called pygmies were moved to Burkina Faso so I went to the oldest village in still around. Omo! When I tell you, these guys have churches and mosques now and know very little about their history. I probed and probed. However, this settlement is supposedly just a 1000 years old but it’s definitely easy to see how they could easily have plotted the stars. There’s a curfew in the region at 6pm so I unfortunately I couldn’t stay to see the stars at night. I will post more pictures once I’m home.
