I had the privilege to hear and see Dr. Clarke on several occasions. But the most memorable was his appearance at Malcolm X College (Chicago). Because there were only 10 people in attendance it was decided that the lecture be moved from the auditorium to a classroom. Up close and personal it was for 3 hours plus a question and answer period. A master griot I hung on to his every word. A lesson in how to recite history not in a formalized euro-centric fashion, no. Dr. Clarke was personable, reflective and anecdotal in his recollections and narrative. He taught Black history, world wide and ‘HOW’ to teach African history in a pan Africanist perspective.
