SEARCH FOR A PURPOSE IN ART [SOURCE: New African, April 2006]
1. In my quest I have been drawn to some writings by an Ayi Kwei Armah, firstly because he took up writing and secondly because he speaks of a duty of ‘cultural workers’.
A. Ayi Kwei Armah
a) A respected Ghanaian novelist, poet, and scholar
b) Published a book in around 2006, his memoires, entitled, “The Eloquence of the Scribes”.
c) Traced origins of modern black Africans to Ancient Egypt, descendants of the people who migrated west after the fall of Egypt.
d) Another branch of those Africans went south to populate Sudan, Congo, and as far as South Africa.B. A Writer
“The accident of birth had placed me in my mother’s lineage, in the Anona clan among the Akan of West Africa. If you are prepared for such beliefs, Anona people are supposed to protect a symbolic bird known by the same name, ekoo, from the coast of Ghana to the Senegal River.”
