              @Zay Oríkì Baba Kíláàkì
Praise poem for Dr. John Henrik Clarke
              by Dr. Ọbádélé Kambon
Ẹnikẹ́ni tí kò bá mọ̀tàn tán lẹlẹ́tàn á máa tàn jẹ
Anyone who doesn’t know history completely is deceived by the deceiver
Ta ní kò mọ̀bátan Baba Ìtàn; Òpìtàn t’ó mọ̀tàn tán?
Who doesn’t know the relative of The Father of History; The historian who knew history to completion?
Afọ́jú t’ó lajú t’ó sì ṣáájú àwọn olójú
The blind one whose eyes were open who also stay ahead of those with sight
Bẹ́ẹ̀ sì ni ó ran àwọn ìrandíran mìíràn lọ́wọ́ láti ríran
Who by the same token, helped other generations to see sights
Ìbátan Baba Ìtàn; Òpìtàn t’ó mọ̀tàn tán
The relative of The Father of History; The historian who knew history to completion
              Ọlọ́lá ńlá t’ó mọ̀nà àtìgbanilà
The grand owner of honor who knew how to save people
Atọ́nà t’ó lànà fún wa látàná
The guide who opened the way since back in the day
T’ó tanná bíi ìtànṣan onítànmọ́lẹ̀ kítàn náà lè máa tàn kálẹ̀
Who shined the light like sunrays that light the earth so that that history could spread throughout the world
Òǹkọ̀wé t’ó mú kí ilé ìkàwé kún fún ìwé
The author who made the libraries overflow with books
Ìbátan Baba Ìtàn; Òpìtàn t’ó mọ̀tàn tán
The relative of The Father of History; The historian who knew history to completion
Baba o mọ àná kí àwa náà lè mọ ọ̀la
Father, you knew yesterday so that we too could know tomorrow
Àṣé, “òwúrọ̀ ni yóò fi hàn bí alẹ́ yóò ti rí”
For, “morning is what foretells how night will be”
              Orísun Ìṣọ̀kan l’à bí i sí
Union Springs is where he was born
Òkun Ìgbẹ́kẹ̀lé-tara-ẹni ni wọ́n jáláìsí sí
The ocean of self-reliance is where he passed on
              Àmọ́, a ń kì í, a ń sà á o ṣáà ní o ò mẹni t’á ń sọ̀rọ̀ yìí!
However, we’re praising him, we’re showering him with accolades, and yet still you say you don’t know who we’re talking about!
Háà! Baba Kíláàkì, ìwọ l’à á ń ké sí!
Haa! Baba Clarke, you are the one we’re calling out to!
Ìbátan Baba Ìtàn; Òpìtàn t’ó mọ̀tàn tán
The relative of The Father of History; The historian who knew history to completion
Ọmọ tuntun t’ó bọ́dúndé tìdùnnú tìdùnnú
The new child who brought in the new year with happiness
Tí ó kun àgbélébùú ní dúdú
Who also painted the cross Black
              Ọlọ́pọlọ t’ó lọ́pọlọ lọ́pọ̀lọpọ̀
The owner of brains who had sense to spare
              T’ó fimú fínlẹ̀ fún ìmọ̀ ìjìnlẹ̀ láti ìbẹ̀rẹ̀ ìpilẹ̀ láti ìpínlẹ̀ dé ìpínlẹ̀
Who tirelessly researched deep knowledge from the beginning of time from one region to the next
              Alákọsílẹ̀ o, alátẹnudẹ́nu o, kò sóhun tí ò kọ́
Whether that which was written by scribes or that which was passed on orally, there was nothing that he didn’t learn
Àyàfi èyí tí kò ì tíì rí, tí kò ì tíì gbọ́
Except that which was not yet seen or that which was not yet heard
              Balógun àwọn jagunjagun ayé-dúdú
The general of those warriors of the Afrikan World
T’ó gbé pósí wá fún ẹnikẹ́ni t’ó bá fẹ́ bá a ṣe aríyànjíyàn
Who brought a coffin for anyone who dared to debate him
              T’ó gbé ẹnikẹ́ni t’ó bá fẹ́ bá a jà dé sàárè
Who carried anyone who wanted to fight against him to the graveyard
              Ẹyin kìí bá òkúta jà
An egg doesn’t fight with a rock
Èso kìí sì bá ọ̀bẹ jà
              A fruit doesn’t fight with a knife
Bẹ́ẹ̀ sì ni dígí kò gbọdọ̀ pe òkò níjà
By the same token, glass had better not call a flying rock to a fight
Òyìnbókóyìnbó t’ó bá fẹ́ bá Baba Kíláàkì jà gbọdọ̀ gbaradì gbígbé ibojìììììììì!
Any european who dared to face Baba Clarke in a fight had better prepare for living in the grave
Ìbátan Baba Ìtàn; Òpìtàn t’ó mọ̀tàn tán
The relative of The Father of History; The historian who knew history to completion
              T’ó ń fẹsẹ̀ rin ìrìn-alágbára ńlá
Who walked a great and mighty walk
T’ó ní, nǹkankíǹkan tí ò bá jẹmọ́ òmìnira ni k’á gbé e dànù
Who said that anything that does not have to do with liberation should be discarded

“My feet have felt the sands
              Of many nations,
              I have drunk the water
              Of many springs.
              I am old.
              Older than the pyramids,
I am older than the race
              That oppresses me,
              I will live on…
              I will out-live oppression.
              I will out-live oppressors.”
