        Htp!

I would like to hear your impressions about this piece, “Marcus Garvey was not a Pan-African”, addressing the historical differences between Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey’s approach (Universal African Nationalism) and the Pan-Africanism.

It’s correct that the term has been hijacked, but it would have been stronger if the one who put together the video was aware that the core ideas at the 1900 conference included a Great Central Negro State, so the thrust of nation would not separate the terms. Also the video conflates personalities with ideas basically making the ideas of Pan-Afrikanism synonymous with the personalities of those who espoused/hijacked the terms.

The 1900’s conference was open to white people and the Sylvester’s Pan-African Association even have a crakkka, Robert Colenso (son of the John Colenso refered in this resolution written by DuBois as secretary of the Conference), as its treasurer.

Nana Garvey also met with the same acting grand imperial wizard who later testified against him “Edward Young Clarke. Imperial Giant of the Ku Klux Klan, came to this city from Atlanta, Ga., yesterday and appeared before the Federal Grand Jury as a witness against Marcus Garvey, the negro leader, who is to be tried on Feb. 20 on a charge of defrauding investors in the Black Star Line. Garvey is the head of the “Back to Africa” movement.”

I agree, but it’s different to have a meeting with an enemy to establish treaties as Garvey did and have the enemy in the very core of our own organizations. The Sylvester’s Pan-African Conference/Association, as well the DuBoisian sequel, were integrationist in aim and methods. Nana Garvey’s interlocutions white the crakkkas was merely cirscunstantial, not programmatic.

I prefer Kmt and Kmtyw to Africa/Africans, but I also don’t think the term should be ceded to the hijackers in the midterm. There are various battlefronts in the intellectual warfare.

By the way, I have an article that should be published on this exact subject of the hijacking of the term and the unsuccessful attempt of the hijackers to replace the term with “All-African”. When we look at the articulated aims and objectives of the first conference, a better case would be made that Du Bois was a hijacker rather than the embodiment of Pan-Afrikanism. Also I have to comment on the video’s call to subscribe and join krakkkabook (rather than supporting a Kmty institution) as diametrically opposed to the ideas of Nana Marcus Garvey.

In a historical sense, the movements were opposittes and irreconciliable at their times. As a brother said:

“No one in their right mind would call DuBois a Garveyite, but they have no problem lumping Mr. Garvey under a label, philosphy and peogram he detested and fought throughout his life.”

Labels cause problems, as long as you allow it in, it never ends, that’s why our enemies keep relabeling us without our knowledge and consent. We should be contented just being African.
