Neno Kikuyu linatokana na mfumo wa Kiswahili wa neno Gĩkũyũ. Gĩkũyũ humaanisha “Mkuyu mkubwa”. Kwa hivyo, Agĩkũyũ katika lugha ya Kikuyu inamaanisha “Watu wa Mkuyu mkubwa.” Matambiko yote kwa Mungu hufanyika chini ya mkuyu (Mũkũyũ) na kama ungekosa, mtini (Mũgumo) ungetumika. Mzeituni (Mũtamaiyũ) ni mti mtakatifu kwa wanawake.
[The term Kikuyu is derived from the Kiswahili form of the word Gĩkũyũ. Gĩkũyũ means “large sycamore (mũkũyũ) tree”. Hence Agĩkũyũ in the Kikuyu language translates to “people of the huge sycamore.”
All sacrifices to Ngai are performed under a sycamore tree (Mũkũyũ) and if one was not available, a fig tree (Mũgumo) would be used. The olive tree (Mũtamaiyũ) is a sacred tree for women.]3 Comments-

I wish I could see the leaves. Just this morning I was thinking of this huge tree we have in our yard. Some of it’s roots don’t reach the ground. I was wondering what is the name. When I used to read a gardening magazine I used to come across ‘gikuyu’ as a type of grass common for lawns. Is that a settlers’ invention?

Kikuyu grass is a very hardy, useful and beautiful grass. It originates in Kikuyu-land and has been introduced to other areas like Australia by settlers
