What do we know on how the Bible was created for the political and upper-class elites, since not many people of the time was educated or able to read?
Some proponents of the KJV will say, “If it was good enough for Paul, it is good enough for me!” Of course, they are simply expressing their loyalty to the KJV, but some people whom I have met actually believe that Paul used the KJV. In reality, Paul lived over 1500 years before the KJV came into existence, and he didn’t speak English. To make it clear for everyone, a short history of the development of our Bible will help. Before the KJV was produced in 1611, there were several translations in usage; the most noted are as follows:
1.The Latin translation, called the Vulgate, was produced by Jerome (347-420)
and became the standard of Western Christianity up until the Protestant Reformation in the Sixteenth Century.
2. The first known translation into the English language was produced by John Wycliffe in 1380.
3. William Tyndale produced another version in the English language in 1526.
4. Luther had a Bible produced in German in the 1530’s, but I will not speak further about this version since it was not in English.
5. In 1541, King Henry VIII had an English Bible produced, called the Great Bible.
6. The Geneva Bible was produced under John Calvin’s oversight in 1560.
7. The Bishops’ Bible was produced under the authority of the Church of England in 1568 and revised in 1572. It was the revised version of the Bishops’ Bible that became the base text for the King James Version (KJV), also called the Authorized Version, first printed in 1611.
