Saint Kitts & Nevis Minister Links Poverty & Health Issues to Slavery
Saint Kitts and Nevis experiences a high incidence of non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes and hypertension, Denzil Douglas, Foreign Minister, Minister of Economic Development and Trade of Saint Kitts and Nevis, told Sputnik Africa.
He explained that these health issues are medically linked to the lasting social and environmental impacts of centuries of enslavement, including systemic poverty and inadequate healthcare.
The Caribbean’s trade development was stunted for generations, as colonial economies relied on the forced transport of Africans to plantations, enriching colonizers while leaving enduring structural inequities, the minister noted.
Douglas emphasized that historical and ongoing harms, such as sugarcane’s environmental impact and contribution to climate change, have fueled calls for reparations, as colonizing powers have inadequately addressed the region’s climate challenges despite available funds.
Saint Kitts and Nevis is not “just simply asking for money,” but recognition that its crippling debt levels stem directly from the legacy of slavery, Douglas clarified, proposing debt forgiveness as a meaningful form of reparatory justice.
