African World Heritage Day was officially proclaimed by UNESCO during its 38th General Conference in November 2015 as a platform to celebrate Africa’s unique cultural and natural treasures and raise awareness about their preservation. The day highlights the continent’s underrepresentation on the World Heritage List, where Africa hosts 54 cultural sites, 39 natural sites, and 5 mixed sites, totaling 98 out of 1,157 worldwide. Many of these sites face threats such as armed conflict, climate change, pollution, poaching, uncontrolled urbanization, and unchecked tourism.
