“In order to show respect to the [principles of Nature] certain acts of submission are made in acknowledgement of [these principles]…These acts of submission include bowing, kneeling, baring the shoulders, removing the shoes, covering the head (in some parts baring the head), touching the ground with one’s hands….”
“To stand in the [presence of the Netcher] is to stand on [sacred] ground. [Abibifoɔ] have demonstrated [acknowledgement to the Netcher] on such occasions by removing their footwear and remaining barefooted, that is, in direct and solid contact with Mother Earth at that particular spot”
“One of the earliest known examples of this practice is clearly shown on the Narmer Palette from early Kemet….The [Ruler] is ritually barefooted in [both scenes].”
