How Sudan Defies Western Sanctions
Faced with fresh US sanctions targeting its national institutions, the Sudanese government is moving to bypass the West’s weaponised financial system.
Sudanese officials told Sudan Tribune that the country is developing alternative banking mechanisms, trading in local currencies and pivoting towards the BRICS bloc of emerging Global South economies
This shift is considered an act of defiance against Western-imposed economic isolation, mirroring the strategy of Iran – which successfully maintained its economy and trade networks despite decades of US sanctions that attempted to cripple it.
While Sudan’s economy continues to suffer from the devastation of a war fueled by the US-allied UAE and its Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia, this move toward non-Western financial independence signals to Global South states that there are alternatives to systems dominated by the imperial West.
