Does anyone know if there is an indigenous Afrikan term for iatrogenesis?
Here is the definition: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/iatrogenic
-
Haven’t heard of any
-
If it doesn’t already exist in Kiswahili I bet you could create it. It’d be some combination of “origin” and “healer”/”doctor”, so that it’s conveyed that the origin of the malady comes from the doctor.
-
I think the reason it doesn’t exist is a difference in worldview. I haven’t heard of iatrogenesis in Black Afrikan medicine in practice
-
That makes sense. I do think it would be good to have an indigenous term to explain yurugu medical failures.
-
That could work but it would need the name “mzungu” somewhere to emphasize that it’s yurugu’s failures and Black Afrikans are not involved
