This woman below with the toy umbrella (and me in her lap), was my great grandmother. Her mother was a little child, the daughter of the younger man on the right, the future king of Dahomey sitting with his father (when he was the king).
The young princess was not much older than I was in the photo below when she was stolen from Dahomey west Africa. She somehow survived the journey on the slave ship, was caught up in a slave revolt and was lost in a strange new continent. She was found, adopted, renamed and raised by the Haudenosaunee people.
Can you imagine, as a parent, how it must have felt to have your child stolen, kidnapped, beaten, taken away on a ship and sold to strangers, never to see them again.
Can you even imagine what it must have felt like to be that frightened little child being abused in a strange new world?
Well, her spirit and DNA lives in my spirit and DNA and as a living, breathing shrine to her, my ancestor, it is my duty, destiny and determination to return her to our homeland Africa.
Even if I draw my last breath as I take my first step upon African soil, my mission will be completed!
