IT'S OFFICIAL: Burkina Faso Has Ended All Diplomatic Relations With France

Burkina Faso has officially severed all diplomatic relations with France, effective immediately

Burkina Faso has officially ended all diplomatic relations with France, with the decision taking effect immediately, June 26, 2026.

“Good evening to the valiant people of Burkina Faso and to all the friends of Burkina Faso.

The Government of Burkina Faso wishes to inform the national and international public that it has taken the decision to severe its diplomatic relations with the Republic of France, effective today, June 26, 2026.

This decision follows a thorough assessment of the current state of bilateral relations between Burkina Faso and France. The essential conditions for promoting relations built on mutual respect, reciprocal trust, respect for the principle of non-interference in internal affairs, and national sovereignty have not been met. This situation is reflected, among other things, in France relentless activities of going against the interests of Burkina Faso; its openly declared neo-colonial ambitions; its active support for subversive networks and terrorists who continues to destabilize our country and in the Sahel; its perfidy (negative, falsity, dishonest, untrustworthy, deceptive, deceitful) and bias statements and opinions about our country, aimed at turning Burka Faso into a pariah within the international community.

In the face of all this imperialist designs aim to dominate our country and subjugate our people, we have chosen sovereignty.

The Government of Burkina Faso wishes to emphasize that this decision does not in any way call into question the historic, cultural, social, and humane ties that unite the Burkinabè and French people. It concern exclusively the institutional framework of relations between the two states at the diplomatic level.

The Government of Burkina Faso assures the national and international community of its determination and commitment to ensure the protection of foreign nationals in Burkina Faso. This is to reaffirm Burkinabè hospitality as well as the preservation of foreign nationals interests in Burkina Faso.

This calls upon all citizens of Burkina Faso to demonstrate responsibility and civic-mindedness towards French nationals and all expatriates living on Burkinabè soil, and in strict respect and adherence to the laws of the Republic of Burkina Faso.

The Government of Burkina Faso reaffirms its determination to pursue an independent foreign policy based on diversifying its global partnerships, strengthening regional cooperation, developing balanced relationships with all states, and promoting peace, security, and sustainable development.

The Government of Burkina Faso remains open to dialogue with all states within the international community, on the basis of mutual respect, trust, reciprocity, sovereign equality, and the defense of each party’s legitimate interests.

The Government of Burkina Faso remains committed on building together with all nations that cherish peace and justice, for a free, just and fair world, and a more united world.”

—Pingdwendé Gilbert Ouedraogo Government of Burkina Faso Communication Minister

        Ouagadougou

        June 26, 2026

🔥 This historic announcement, delivered on national television by Communications Minister Pingdwendé Gilbert Ouedraogo, marks the total collapse of institutional ties between Burkina Faso and its former colonial ruler, France.

✊🏿 In an official statement, the Government of Burkina Faso announced it that has decided to break off all diplomatic relations with the French Republic. This means both countries will no longer maintain formal diplomatic ties with each other, including ambassadors and official diplomatic representatives.

Moving forward both countries will not have any diplomatic ties with each other, no ambassadors or representatives, whatsoever.

The decision marks another major turning point in the relationship between Burkina Faso and its former colonial power, France. Over the past several years, Burkina Faso and the Alliance of Sahel States, has expelled French forces, ended military cooperation with France and shifted its foreign policy towards strengthening regional partnership and asserting greater national sovereignty.

        Key Details of the Declaration

        • Official Justification: The Government of Burkina Faso stated that the essential conditions for mutual respect, reciprocal trust, national sovereignty, and non-interference no longer exist.
        • Accusations Against France: The Government of Burkina Faso accuse France of harboring “neo-colonial ambitions” and actively supporting “subversive networks and terrorists” operating in the Sahel region. France has denied all such allegations.
        • Impact on Citizens: The statement explicitly noted that the decision exclusively impacts institutional state and diplomatic relations and does not change the historical, cultural, or social bonds between the Burkinabè and French peoples. The Government of Burkina Faso pledged that French nationals currently residing in Burkina Faso will remain legally protected.

🗣For many across Kmt=Abibiman=Farafina=The Black Land (Africa), this development reflects a broader discussion about The Continent’s rights to determine its own political, security and economic future without external influence or interference. Others sees it as a significant shift that could reshape relations between the west and West African nations, and The Continent as a whole.

        The French Response

Following the announcement, French authorities strongly condemned the move. Paris labeled the severance a “hostile and baseless decision” that reflects a “troubling drift” by Burkina Faso’s military leadership. The French government confirmed that reciprocal diplomatic measures are currently under review.
